Sociological imagination is the human ability to understand the relationship between personal experiences and broader social structures. It is a concept that enhances humans understanding of the connections between their lived experiences or their lives and the larger historical and social contexts in which they exist. For instance, through sociological imagination, humans are able to connect personal troubles to public/social issues. While using unemployment, the sociological imagination may enable a person to see it as a personal trouble attributing to their individual circumstances while connecting the same to social issues like globalization, social economic policies and technological changes that serve as potential triggers to unemployment. Basically, sociological imagination as a way of human thinking allows them to go beyond personal experiences connecting them to broader social structures.
When Mills say that life of an individual or history of a society cannot be understood without understanding both, he implies on the interconnectedness of personal life experiences and larger societal structures (Mills, pg, 5).
