Bridging cultural divides increase the capacity to develop interpersonal relationships and resolve conflicts in diverse contexts. Understanding the significance of cultural differences and the impact on communication improves the capacity of individuals to develop relationships with other people. Norms, values and practices define behaviors in communication and intercultural competence facilitates intercultural communication and interactions. Acknowledging the role of culture in defining communication facilitates the process of developing interpersonal relationship in formal and informal settings (Braslauskas, 2021). The purpose of this paper is to provide an overview of the role of culture in communication, relationships, conflicts, and cultural transition. It offers an overview of the major aspects of cultural differences and how intercultural competence may affect communication in a diverse context. The paper further describes the process of relationship building across cultures and the significance of inclusivity and equity in advancing diversity. It describes a summary of the role of technology in intercultural communication and presents a personal reflection on culture on communication.
Understanding Cultural Differences
Diversity in the modern work and social environment poses challenges in communication as a result of the differences in expectations of people from different cultures. Body language is one of the cultural factors affecting communication that causes barriers in language among people from different communities (Byram & Golubeva, 2020). In intercultural communication, body language and space may send the wrong impression when people interact in the formal and informal settings. For instance, the Mexicans favor eye contact and gestures during their interaction while such body language may be offensive among most Asian cultures. There are significant cultural differences in how people address people during their first interaction. Asians are more reserved than people from western cultures during their initial interactions especially in formal settings such as business meetings. Language is an important part of cultural differences that affects communication such as when migrants come into the United States and face challenges speaking English.
Cultural norms, values, and practices affect expectations, perspectives, and behavior during intercultural communication. In each culture, norms shape expectations of behavior and define the rules of interpersonal interaction in varying settings. People expect that others will abide by such rules and intercultural communication may cause barriers when there are differences in norms. For example, directness is a major characteristic of the American norms in communication while major European cultures emphasize on hierarchy and respect. Values define the expectations and behavior on how cultures address various important topics during communication (Kohli Bagwe & Haskollar, 2020). The expectation of the value of freedom may differ between the American culture and the Chinese culture. People’s expectations and behavior are defined by their emphasis on critical societal values in their culture. Cultural practices define behavior and affect intercultural interactions by influencing how individuals develop and value relationships. Norms, values, and practices define expectations and behavior among cultures and translate to differences in communication styles.
Developing Intercultural Competence
Developing intercultural competence demands an understanding of communication theories and their application in intercultural interactions. Expectations and behaviors vary across cultures and affect fundamental aspects of verbal and non-verbal communication. Failure to adapt to the cultural dimensions of communication in a diverse cultural environment could lead to communication failure. Geert Hofstede’s theory of cultural dimensions develops a framework of how values relate to behavior and define approaches in communication. Expectations and behavior differences affect the effectiveness of intercultural communication and competence.
