A growing global population and an increasing dependence on technological appliances has led to dependence on energy. It is fundamental that consumers consider the impact of generating and using energy on the environment, the economy, and the people (Ahmed et al., 2022). Sustainable energy sources take the three factors into consideration and ensure easy access to energy for all people with minimal harm to the environment and the community and at low costs. By targeting domestic consumers of energy, this project seeks to demonstrate the potential for significant and impactful changes on how people access and use electricity in their home. I chose the building since I have knowledge of energy consumption patterns and the changes I could make to facilitate sustainable consumption for myself and people in my community (Jenkins et al., 2021). From experience and research, I noted that my consumption matches that of a typical home at 10,500 kWh a year and redesigning could facilitate sustainability. What Engineers Could Redesign To achieve the net-zero energy goal, engineers could target both the production and consumption aspects of energy in my home to make it more sustainable. Redesigning the home to facilitate the implementation of alternative energy sources is one of the changes that the project seeks to implement. The three types of alternative energy applicable for my home are the use of solar energy by installing a small turbine, a solar power system using 10 solar panels, and the use of solar water heating (Jenkins et al., 2021). Redesigning would ensure the applicability of the equipment such as solar panels, heaters, and a small turbine on the home for energy production. Moreover, making the home net-zero energy should involve making changes that reduce energy consumption in the home. The choice of equipment at home and the general design affects the energy consumed by appliances and for general domestic uses. Making changes in the design to increase insulation is one of the goals that would make redesigning affective to meet the target for sustainability.
