In the earlier days, culture influenced how symptoms were perceived, explained, and dictated how and where to seek help. Before rapid globalization and industrialization, culture determined the best way to address and express distress. In this reference, therefore, some ailments were culture-based and not universal like it happens in the contemporary world. As per cultures, they came up with remedies and solutions for specific syndromes, and each culture managed similar syndromes differently. With the advancement of technology and industrialization, cultures are being influenced by other cultures, and the ancient syndromes and ailments found remedies. Culture-bound syndromes were first expressed over 60 years ago with the underlying argument that certain psychiatric syndromes were confined to specific cultures. This essay aims to discuss the historical and current status of Dhat, a culture-bound syndrome dominant in the Indian subcontinent.
