Chapter 9 Analyze if taking of human life for self-defense is justifiable. Give reasons for your answers. I believe that taking a human life in self-defense can be justifiable under certain circumstances. According to Thiroux and Krasemann (2012), the Value of Life Principle teaches that all human life deserves respect, but it also recognizes that people have a moral duty to protect innocent lives, including their own, when they are threatened with their life. If someone is trying to kill or seriously harm me or another innocent person, I believe I have the right to defend myself, even if that means using lethal force as a last resort. In that situation, the act of self-defense isn’t about valuing one life over another; it’s about stopping an unjust attack and preserving life that has not forfeited its moral worth. At the same time, I understand the argument against killing in self-defense, which says that all life should be respected and that taking any life is always wrong. However, I think this view, while admirable, doesn’t take into account the reality that not everyone values the lives of others in the same way.
